    Very interesting. My paternal grandfather was an Air Raid Warden. His base was at Wensum Park off Drayton Road. As a child he would tell stories about the war and what he’d seen. He was the gardener at Wensum Park. He and my grandmother lived on Junction Road.

    holy moly, my favorite weird 19th century English dude, George Borrow!!!!! I mean, seriously a lot of exclamation points!!! I've read "Bible in Spain" and "Wild Wales" and I have an old collection of his books from a late 19th century print run. He was a complete jerk but absolutely fascinating, and he had a knack for describing landscape that has rarely been equaled.

    • @michaelmcnally1242
      @michaelmcnally1242 Місяць тому

      Note that by "jerk" I mean that he was kind-of rude, basically asking random strangers their religious details. All the time. However, that's why I love him.

    A little bit of history, please read. As you said in your video, you do intend to revisit this super interesting Maritime museum at some point. You did also say a small bit about the Naval Museum, that’s only about 100 yards away. Both being at Sparrows Nest, lowestoft. One day I did visit both museums and I absolutely loved the Naval Museum. So when you do go, I do advise you to have a look round the Naval Museum. There was a small entry fee, and to be honest, I can’t remember how much it was. It is a very small museum over two floors, but I assure you it really is worth a visit. It was absolutely worth every penny. I saw things in the museum. I really never expected to see. Real samurai swords. A real Vickers machine gun, and other guns. A real German WW2 flag., amongst many other, extremely interesting World War II items. There was also a World War II bunker on the same site that most people don’t know about. The entrance to the bunker was actually just outside the entrance to the Naval Museum . Hopefully the correct gentleman will be looking after the Naval Museum and fill you in on info about the bunker. Also ask about the burials just outside the entrance. Again, this is all very interesting if you have an interest in the Second World War. I hope this helps you on your next visit. The Canons and the war memorial are also well worth a visit on the same site. Another museum you must see is Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse museum. Its a full day out and you will need good walking shoes. Again, there is a small fee for going in, but it’s well worth it. Keith.. UK 🇬🇧

    Good morning folks, Absolutely excellent presentation! I am currently 74 years old and my father was a B-17 pilot at that time. He and his original crew completed their 25 missions (over Germany) and were so very fortunate to return home. He finished the war years as a B-17 instructor. I honestly don’t think enough credit is given to these, literally, absolutely heroic young men - the majority of whom were only in their early and mid 20’s and in command of these outstanding, and occasionally deadly, combat aircraft. I’m just not sure if our current and chronologically similar generation could have done as well. This is my first visit to your site and just have to subscribe. Thank you very much and all the very best to you and yours, Terry (in the middle of Minnesota, USA)

    This is a very interesting video and the presentation is excellent. I had no idea we had such raids in Norwich though my mum did speak of one around Gresham Road. I do remember growing up in the 80s the air raid siren at West Earlham would sometimes be heard, no doubt because we were in the middle of the Cold War

    There is a public house named The Margaret Catchpole in Cliff Lane, Ipswich, Suffolk, England. Lovely looking building. Big car park. But they don’t serve food, so I am not sure how they are still open!! It’s right next to Holywells Park which was given to the town by the Cobbold family many years ago. It’s not far from the Waterfront (which would then have been the Docks).
